Both are formidable fighters. Its the pilot that will make the difference. R37 has long legs but is bulkier and easier to trash. AAMRAAM doesn't go as far but has better maneuverability against agile targets. It a compromise, range vs maneuverability you can not have both, maybe if the missile jettisons some of its mass mid flight. Ukrainians in 16 will require a lot of training. Not sure they can use the Viper as well as a Native pilot.

The F-16s don't stand a chance. It isn't just that the F-16s planes are inferior but the Ukraine pilots are also inferior and not battle tested. But with an effecive missile range of 180 miles, the Russian fighters usually wouldn't need to take off, they could shoot down enemy planes while still standing on the tarmac! Why use planes at all, why not fire 180-mile misiles from the ground or from a tower? Then when all the enemy had been shot down, your own planes could run riot!

Interesting but short in thinking that ukraine will just have statically have f16 as a single presence. You cant know how exactly Ukraine will use them along with whatever other systems. The only thing we can do is to wait and see.

Most of Ukraine's F-16s are going to be roughly 1996 to 2002 technology, so most of it will depend on just where the R-37M's no escape zone actually ends up being, and just how well Ukrainian pilots of been trained to defend adequately against incoming missile threats. I will not be surprised to see F-16s evade the R-37M, and I will not be surprised to see F-16s succeed in downing some Russian aircraft with their older AMRAAMs. Having said that, I will also not be surprised to see new F-16 pilots fall prey to a Russian designed missile that is roughly 2000 to 2010 technology.
